There were several reasons why John Wesley insisted on his preachers practicing itinerancy, and one of the most important to him was a fresh perspective.  He felt that the fresh perspectives a new preacher brought to a congregation were important to the health of the congregation.  If the same preacher preached to a congregation over and over, he felt they would become too familiar and complacent in their studies of scripture. He thought that they just might start to disobey one of the general rules: to attend to the ordinances of God.

Today, for some the itineracy system is frustrating, especially new Methodists.  They ask why they have to get a new pastor every few years.  They ask why they don't get to pick their new pastor.  They wonder how long this new pastor will last before the bishop moves her/him and sends a new pastor.

While the goodbyes caused by itineracy can be hard, there are still fresh perspectives to be brought out each time a new pastor comes to the church.  New ideas to try, new stories to be told, new experiences to be had, new sermons to be heard.

As we begin this new stage in our journeys, I am excited to join the Barnsley family, for however long I am appointed here.  I am excited to journey with you through the coming months and years.  To learn about what it is that drives Barnsley.  To learn from all of you as I continue on the path to full ordination.  I cannot wait to get to know all you better, and walk alongside you on this journey.
