                   Choose Wisely

So, about that New Year’s resolution... how is it coming?

While I hope my bringing it up now is not a sore spot, I suspect it might be.  The statistics about how well we keep those resolutions are not that great from what I can remember.   Most of us do not do so good in keeping up with those yearly attempts to be better.
Through the years, I have not been really good at it either.  There is simply too much going on at New Year’s for me to be successful at these, I think.  What have I found to be more helpful?   Making needed changes in my life when those changes need to happen.  When my doctor told me I needed to lose some weight back in November 2015, I made the change starting around December 1 rather than wait till January 1.  My body seemed to appreciate the change sooner rather than later (and I met my goal and continue to do so).
It seems to me, the date on the calendar rarely has the most significant influence.   Besides the issues that relate to our health, our work, our families and other influences and other needed reasons to change, there is another aspect of our lives of even greater importance.  Who are the people influencing us?  We take it for granted, I think, when we are adults but we dare not neglect to consider just who is surrounding us and influencing us.
The writer of Proverbs offers us many simple but profound words of wisdom and caution such as Proverbs 13:20, “Wise friends make you wise, but you hurt yourself by going around with fools.”  This makes a lot of sense when we are younger or as parents, but even as adults, the wisdom remains true.  Those who are truly wise and those who are fools may not always be clear either.
Because of my own journey in recent years, I’ve considered this many times and have found myself asking a few questions you might find helpful…
—What is the wise thing to do?

Who are people “telling” me they are?
—Do I believe people, when by their words and actions, they tell me otherwise?
—Are those around me inspiring me to be better?

—Do those around me want me to be better?
As a time of reflection, Lent offers us opportunities to consider many things.  Who we surround ourselves with might well influence our Lent more than anything else.  Ask good questions and choose wisely!

Loving Life,
